The triangular shape helps students to relax. It increases finger contact with the pen/pencil surface to improve control without squeezing. The drawings below show how it works.

The three sides created by a triangular shape provide wider surfaces for pointer finger, thumb and middle finger. The finger surfaces are also presented at better angles for hand structure. The result is better feel and therefore more relaxation. If your student is pinching and squeezing with multiple finger involvement, select this thicker pencil. A thicker barrel separates the small muscles and allows better gross involvement. It means that the child is able to use the muscle groups that we want to train for fluent writing later on.The 5050 Finger Fitter - No Eraser For Handwriting Practice Lessons.
This thick triangular pencil offers several advantages:5050 Finger Fitter (Dozen) $3.75 (Replaces the TryRex B21 no eraser)
- No eraser! Directed handwriting practice sessions accomplish very little if the student is constantly erasing. It is a sign that the pupil is not using the correct kind of movement. When the child stops to erase he or she is not moving with rhythm to internalize the entire letter pattern! No erasing should be the rule. Direct the writing of several examples with "Action Words" then pick the best. Try again to work for improved control of the rhythmic kind of movement.
- Wider is better! A student who pinches on the pencil usually is helped by a thicker device - at any grade level. Offer older students a thick pencil to find out if it makes a difference. You may be surprized at the number of students who like the thicker pencil better - and achieve better control.
- The lead is also thicker. It produces a broader trace which helps to reduce "pinchitis." A sharp point produces such a fine line it is difficult to see unless pressure is applied to darken it. The pressure usually breaks a sharp point which means more sharpening. The broad traces are easy to see without pressure, promoting better relaxation - and the pencils last longer too!

Good position is important when writing with a ball point. A poor angle causes skipping and leads to those strange balls of inky fuzz that build up around the tip. It makes sense to provide opportunity for students in grades 4, 5 and 6 to practice writing with a pen. Confidence and control of the writing movement improves with practice. The ball rolling on the page presents a new challenge. Writing with a pencil is like running down the hall in a pair of sneakers. A ball point pen handles more like a pair of roller blades. We provide an attractive pen with unique position reminders on the round barrel. Help your students gain the confidence and good position skills they need to improve fluency.ITEM # PPP $ 6.95 PER DOZEN - MEDIUM POINT - BLUE INK
