The focus at grade four is to continue improvement of rhythm and control while introducing adult tools and proportion. Many more students are ready for fine motor patterning by this time and introduction of the pen to practice lessons creates a whole new challenge. Rhythmic movement and control objectives remain to provide developmental overlap as do the ergonomics of position.
Cognitive understanding of the goals and self-evaluation play a more important role but the basic skill development structure of lesson plans continues with daily exercise via the method.

Where pupils
come from a We Write To Read third grade, practice sessions are easy because
"they know the drill." If there is no organized program in place in your
school, initial sessions will require a little explanation because the
pupils may not be familiar with the directed lesson format. Ten minutes
a day for handwriting skill development, using the Peterson Method, may
seem like a sacrifice at first, but the gains in fluency will quickly translate
into more teaching time during each school day. Please click the link to
review the method section.
If you haven't
done so yet, please visit the section on the Cursive
Position Guide. Nine of ten students targeted for remediation need
to improve paper position skills.
