If you are currently tutoring students to improve language skills...

If you are retired from the classroom and would like to do a little tutoring...

If you are a substitute teacher and would like to tutor independently...

If you are a concerned parent who wants to help your child or others...

Identifying the Need

If you are working with students now, it is likely you have noticed the handwriting problems presented by so many children and adults. They must work very laboriously to put thoughts on paper in a legible form. For many children the writing process is so labored, it interferes with learning language skills like spelling and vocabulary. Is it any wonder composition skills are out of reach? If you have noticed the problem please take a few minutes to learn how you can help to solve it. I wish to enlist people who want to make a difference - and train you to help. You will be surprised how easily you can make a huge difference for those who seem unable to write legibly with any sort of ease.

During the last two decades skill instruction for handwriting has been all but eliminated from the curriculum in far too many schools. This is particularly true at the college level. Most classroom teachers report that handwriting was never mentioned. Others say the only suggestion for handwriting instruction was to investigate programs available from commercial publishing companies. This is part of the problem.

Major publishing companies continually promote programs based upon a certain strategy for instruction. Their "strategy" for teaching and learning handwriting skills has a name. It is called, Trace and Copy. Since the invention of the "workbook" this strategy has been constantly promoted to our schools. Did you know that many schools have a set schedule for "adoption" of a "new" program. Every few years they buy all new workbooks, wall alphabets and charts with "new" teacher materials. They do not recognize that the strategy for instruction and learning remains the same. Slightly altered letter shapes won't make a difference. Trace & Copy is a strategy that consistently fails to develop fluent skills for the majority of children because it does not include movement as an objective.

Classroom teachers see the lack of fluency and lament the lack of time to help. They hate to see their students laboring with written classwork that should be finished easily. Most recognize that a lack of handwriting skill is also hampering pupil progress in language skill development. However, they feel helpless to do anything about it. They are not aware that there is an alternative strategy for teaching and learning that is based upon movement. You can teach students how to move. And, it is easy to do once you understand the strategy.

A Unique Teaching Strategy

The Peterson strategy and plan of action has been successful since 1908. Until internet technology became more common, our size and geography has limited our area of influence to Pennsylvania and surrounding state systems. Our method for teaching and learning is unique because it includes fluent movement as an objective from the beginning. The strategy is easy to learn and easy to use. Best of all, results (good and bad) are easy to document. If you are willing to invest a few hours to learn, you could begin to help your students within two weeks.

All I ask is that you study our research-based curriculum and material, attend an on-line meeting and spend some time with me on the telephone to demonstrate that you understand how to implement the unique strategy that is the key to success. You can learn how to be a handwriting teacher that can get results. You will need Acrobat Reader to open and study a number of pdf format documents as part of the training. If you do not have Acrobat Reader, it is available free from Adobe at www.adobe.com.

If my comments so far have sparked your interest, please invest a bit of time to learn more about the Peterson directed lesson strategy and our commitment to helping with handwriting skill development. Our web site Information Directory offers a number of free presentations that will likely give you more information about teaching handwriting than any other single source - anywhere. To learn more about instruction you need only invest a bit of your time. It will likely take you about two hours to thoroughly digest the presentations linked to our Information Directory page.

Find Out About Our Tutor Program

If your investigation sparks more interest, contact me directly by phone or email. I am ready to provide more information that can get you started quickly. There is a fee of $75.00 for the tutor training. That fee includes special tools for needs analysis and documentation, a plan of action to follow with your students and continuing support. You will also want to purchase materials for instruction and will be eligible for Tutor Discounts on those materials. You can make a real difference for those students who struggle to put thoughts on paper.

As schools come to grips with testing required by No Child Left Behind, the need to improve individual student fluency with written language is becoming more apparent each year. Thanks to the internet, we are now connecting with schools and home schooling parents in every time zone - every state. I have received numerous messages asking about a tutor who knows our method for instruction. A visible network will increase the number of requests for help. I would like to make you into the tutor they seek and be able to guide interested contacts to you. Together we can make a difference.
